How to Put HTV on Mugs

Bundle promotions in this post have ended. You can find the designs we used HERE.

When it comes to customizing a mug, you've got lots of options - including HTV!  In this post, we'll show you how to press heat transfer vinyl (HTV) onto a mug using a mug press.

Our mug designs can be found in the Christmas in July SVG & Font Bundle:

Cut your design out of heat transfer vinyl and weed out the excess HTV around the design. Be sure to mirror the design before cutting.

We're using Siser Easyweed white HTV and red glitter HTV

Designs that will work best are bold and thick. Details that are very small or very thin can more easily peel off the mug.

With HTV, you can use any type of mug - you don't need to use a coated mug, such as ones for sublimation. Our mugs came from the Dollar Tree.

Before turning on your mug press, place the mug inside the mug press with the handle up.

Adjust the press for medium/firm pressure. However, you should not have the pressure set so tight you have trouble closing the press (loosen pressure in that case). You do not want the pressure to be so loose that the mug is slipping around.

Check out the following blog post for more about mug presses:

Take the weeded HTV transfer and place it onto the mug. Use a few pieces of heat resistant tape to hold it in place.

You want the HTV to lay flat against the mug.

If necessary, cut into the carrier sheet (NOT the HTV), so that you can more easily manipulate the design and the HTV lays flat.

Use additional pieces of heat tape to secure the HTV firmly to the mug.

Set the mug press for 360 degrees F and press for 30 seconds.

Carefully remove the hot mug from the press and wait a few seconds for it to cool.

Gently peel the carrier sheet off. Do this slowly and watch for any areas that may not have adhered.

If the HTV has not adhered, replace the carrier sheet with HTV back onto the mug and apply additional heat tape to firmly secure that area to the mug.

Press the mug again, and remove the carrier sheet.

To care for this mug, handwash only. Don't soak the mug and don't use any abrasive scrubbers over the HTV.
