How to Find the Right Pressure on a Heat Press

Having the right pressure on your heat press is very important for a successful project. In this post we'll show you how to easily find the right pressure on your heat press.

Start with a cold heat press (turned off). Simply close the press. If you have to use two hands to close the press, this is considered high pressure. You'll feel slight resistance while closing the press, however it should not be so difficult that you really struggle to close it.

Open the press and then turn the pressure knob to decrease the pressure of the heat press. Now close the press again.  If you can very easily close it with one hand, your press is now at light to medium pressure.

Take 2-3 sheets of copy paper & place them on the bottom platen of the press with half of it sticking out.

Close the press (it should still be easy to close the press with one hand).

Pull on the sheets of paper with one hand. If the paper doesn't move, then the press is at medium pressure.

If you are able to pull the copy paper out with light resistance, then this is considered light pressure.

With the correct pressure setting, you're now ready to fire up the press! Check the manufacturer's instructions for the product you're using (ie HTV, sublimation) to see what pressure they recommend.

We used medium pressure on the StarCraft Mint 15 x 15 inch heat press with Siser Easyweed HTV on this baseball raglan shirt.
