Wood Burning for Beginners: A Wood Burning Tutorial

No need to be intimidated when it comes to wood burning art because we'll show you the wood burning basics in this wood burning tutorial for beginners.

Wood burning art starts with a good design to create wood burning stencils. The design we're using is a camping theme SVG. Use the design software of choice to turn your design into a stencil. If you're new to stencils, check out this tutorial - How to Turn Any SVG into a Vinyl Stencil

Cut the stencil with the cutting machine of your choice. You can use vinyl for your wood burning stencil or vinyl stencil material. And weed out the excess material.

One of the best tips for how to do wood burning for beginners is to make sure you apply the stencil onto the wood firmly. Be sure to burnish really well.

In a small bowl or plastic cup, mix together the following wood burning gel recipe:

  • 1 Tbsp ammonium chloride
  • 8 tsp thickener (Thick-it Food & Beverage Thickener)
  • 1/2 cup hot water

Mix thoroughly with a popsicle stick, and then let sit for about a minute.

Use a foam brush to lightly apply a thin layer of wood burning gel over the stencil, making sure to get full, even coverage of the entire design. And let dry for 30 minutes.

Remove the wood burning stencil. The wood burning gel will be faint you still should be able to see the design.

Run a heat gun over the areas covered with the wood burning gel. These areas will begin to darken as you apply heat. The more heat you apply, the darker the scorch will become. This process will take several minutes.

With these wood burning for beginners tips, you'll be creating wood burning art in no time!
