DIY Vertical Farmhouse Sign using Torch Paste

Crafting a beautiful farmhouse sign is easier than you might think! With some basic materials and a little bit of creativity, you can make an eye-catching vertical sign for your home. Torch paste is an easy to use solution that will help you get the job done quickly and adds character to any sign.

First, you will want to open up the design you plan on using on your sign in Silhouette Studio. I am using the Farm Sweet Farm design that is included in the Vertical Porch Sign Bundle. This will also help you determine the size board you should cut for your project.

After the vertical porch sign design is brought into Silhouette Studio you will want to make it to size.

Next, you will load the vinyl you will be using as a stencil into your Silhouette machine. I used 'no mat' and white 651 and cut with the recommended vinyl settings.

Weed your stencil. For this you will want to weed out the letters and leave the outside part of the vinyl.

Use transfer tape to transfer the stencil to your wood blank.

Once you have the design on the board and burnished down well. Use a squeegee and begin adding a thin layer of torch paste to the sign.

Wait until it is dry, roughly 5 minutes and remove the stencil.

Once the stencil is removed you will take your sign to a ventilated area and slowly heat up the paste with a heat gun. Try to stay patient, I wasn't at the beginning and my wood started burning as well as the paste, but it is okay, it only added a bit more character. Another tip! Continue to move the heat gun around and stay at a good distance away from the wood, this will help to get a more even burn.

With torch paste, creating a unique and eye-catching farmhouse sign is easier than ever! All you need to do is collect the basic materials, get creative with your design, and follow instructions. This is an easy DIY project that’s sure to bring some rustic charm to your home.

I’m new to all this and have not attempted a stencil – I know I will try this technique. I’m thinking I can purchase the torch paste at a hobby store and the heat gun you use is stronger than a regular hair dryer. Thank you for all the helpful hints you provide in your emails.
