Cricut Design Space Tutorial: How to Make Split Monograms
Do you love the split monogram look as much as we do?
Split Monogram initials make the perfect gift for every occasion: holidays, birthdays, reunions, weddings, teacher gifts.
Today we are going to create 2 split monograms using both text and an SVG design.
Wait until you see how simple this technique is!
Let's first open a new project in Cricut Design Space. Select the Text and type in your letter.
We are using the Gumption font, which is part of the Workout Bundle 2.0. It's a great font for split monograms!
Resize your letter to approx. 6" wide.
Next, add a shape - choose a square and unlock the square by clicking on the lock icon in the bottom left corner. This will allow you to change the size to a rectangle.
After you create the rectangle shape, choose both the layers and click ALIGN - CENTER.
Then choose both layers and click SLICE.
After slicing the layers, select the 3 layers that you do not need & DELETE them.
Your design should now look like this:
Now let's add the split area in the center.
Choose another square shape and unlock it. Drag the shape into a very thin rectangle.
Mine is .111" high and extends a little further horizontally than the "S".
Line it up so it overlaps with the top section of the "S".
Duplicate the thin rectangle and line this one up with the bottom section of the "S".
Now let's first, select all layers and choose ALIGN - Center Horizontally. Then choose WELD to weld your split monogram design.
Let's change the welded design to purple.
Now that we have the split monogram ready, add the text/wording that you'd like in the center.
I used the Gumption font, which is part of the Workout Bundle 2.0.
After you have it where you'd like it placed, choose ALIGN - Center Horizontally.
Then choose ATTACH. This will keep the design in its place when you go to cut.
Click MAKE IT and you can see your brand new Split Monogram Design!
Great job!
Now we are going to create a split monogram with an SVG Cut File.
We are using the Buck & Doe Silhouettes from the Fall & Winter Decor Bundle.
This bundle has SO many amazing designs to create DIY projects, items for craft shows, and of course holiday gifts!
Upload your design into Cricut Design Space:
Hide the Doe layer by clicking on the eyeball in the layer panel. And resize your Buck layer to approx. 11" high.
Now let's follow the same steps as we did for the initial above.
Grab a square shape, unlock the shape and drag into the rectangle shape that will be the center of the split monogram.
Select the rectangle & Buck layers and click ALIGN: CENTER. Then click SLICE (in the bottom right corner.)
Choose the 3 sliced layers that you do not need and click DELETE.
Ta-da! You now have a split Buck! Now let's create a thin rectangle
Now let's create a thin rectangle .111" high, duplicate it and place both thin rectangles so they are touching the top and bottom portions of the Buck layer.
Once they are placed where you want them, select both rectangles and the Buck layer and click on ALIGN: Center Horizontally.
Then while they are still selected, click WELD.
Using the Gumption font, which is part of the Workout Bundle 2.0, add the text you'd like to have in the center of your Split Monogram Buck and adjust to your liking.
Then choose your text layer & the Buck layer and click WELD.
This will weld the letters to the Buck so they cut as one color/layer.
*Note: You could also choose ATTACH so they stay in place but cut as two layers (two different colors) - the choice is yours!
Click MAKE IT and voila! Here is your Split Monogram Buck ready to cut:
