How to Apply Heat Transfer Vinyl to Wood

Bundle promotions in this blog post have expired - you can find the design we used HERE.

In this step-by-step tutorial, we’ll show you how to apply heat transfer vinyl to wood with a heat press.

We are using this cute winter svg design from the Winter Crafter's SVG Bundle.

Cut and weed the wood sign svg design from heat transfer vinyl

Preheat your heat press to the required time, which is 305 degrees F for Siser Easyweed.

Place a piece of parchment paper on the lower platen of the heat press to protect it.

Note that this technique is only going to work with thin, flat, and smaller pieces of wood because they need to be able to fit within the press.

Loosen the heat press pressure considerably to account for the thickness of the wood.

Place the HTV design and then place parchment paper over the entire thing.

Press the HTV - in regards to pressing time, it is very similar to how you would press HTV onto a t shirt.

Remove cover sheet and your sign is done!  It's that easy! The wood sign blank we used for this project is from Joann craft store.

Thank you for the tutorial. Have you ever pressed any wedding hangers? I will loosing the pressure more and see if that helps my problem. I don’t think I’m using much pressure and the time starts at only a few seconds. Doing this it won’t stick. When I try to add time it starts to wave and melt. I’m using 300 degrees for 5 seconds. The press isn’t clamping closed, basically sitting on top of the hanger. Everytime I try longer time and mpre pressure, the HTV starts to wave and melt. The hanger does have polyurathan as a top coat. Any suggestions?
