How to Cut PNG Files with Cricut

When purchasing a design from So Fontsy you will receive multiple file types including the SVG and either a JPEG or PNG.  All of them can be opened in Cricut Design Space and cut with Cricut cutting machine.  This tutorial will show you how to open a PNG file in Cricut Design space.  If you’re looking for a tutorial on how to open an SVG in Cricut Design Space check this out.

To open a PNG, start by opening up Cricut Design Space and click “New Project” to get a blank canvas.

You will now have to pick a type of file. This choice actually can make a huge difference in your import. For most png files, your background will be transparent so the “simple” option should work fine. If you have any trouble with further steps in this tutorial, go back and start over picking a different option here.

Note: You can find the It’s All About the Pie design here.

On the next screen, you will need to make sure that your image is importing correctly. Make sure that there is a checkered background behind everything that you do not want as part of your image. That would include the centers of letters, circles, etc. You can click on anything that you would like to erase here and it will turn it to checkered. Click “continue” when done.

You now have two options for saving your file. Either save as a print then cut or a cut file only. Here we are going to choose “save as a cut image” to cut this file from cardstock or vinyl. If you wanted to print the image, say for a notecard, you could choose print then cut here.
